Exhibition Introduction

Step into a powerful journey of realisation, resilience, and hope. This exhibition unfolds in four evocative parts, each exploring the lived experience of domestic abuse—from the initial awakening and the emotional turmoil, through the complex web of professional involvement, to the enduring hope for healing and change. Through expressive canvases and therapeutic doodles, the artist invites you to witness a story of survival, the search for understanding, and the aspiration for new beginnings.

The Awakening and The Reality

This section invites you to witness the artist’s first steps towards confronting uncomfortable truths. The art depicts conflict and chaos and reflects a period of denial, where excuses masked toxic behaviours. The process of art making was a powerful tool to bring the unconscious into a state of awareness. Through art, the artist encourages viewers to share in the emotional awakening.

The Mess of Domestic Abuse

Expressive canvases layered with paint convey the chaos and pain of domestic abuse. The artist channels difficult emotions into each piece, aiming to evoke empathy and emotional response. These works represent the abuse and coercive control endured, drawing viewers into the raw experience.

The Web of Systems

A nine-piece set of therapeutic doodles, created during the first three years after separation, incorporates silhouettes of professionals involved with the family. This section highlights the anxiety and uncertainty of being believed, post separation abuse, and the lasting impact of emotional abuse. The questioning and statements from professionals, evoked deep levels of anxiety that could only be expressed and accepted through helpful doodling. The artist hopes for this section to bring awareness to the complexity of navigating social care and court systems.

Hope & Aspired Faith

The final part radiates hope for the future. The artist expresses a mother’s wish for her daughter’s wellbeing and the hope that the perpetrator will change for the better. Signs from the universe, symbolise new beginnings and gives the artist aspired faith that guides her journey forward.
