Rom-Com’s are so back! Raine Allen Miller’s debut feature film Rye Lane (2023) follows two twenty-somethings, both reeling from bad break-ups, who connect over the course of an eventful day in South London. Our protagonists Yas (Vivian Oparah) and Dom (David Jonsson) take us on a tour around the heart of South London as they get lost in conversation, thought and a slew of whacky shenanigans. Rye Lane oozes with an infectious energy making it almost impossible not to fall in love with it. Visually, this film is pure cinematic candy. Every frame is intentionally packed full of energetic, stylish and colourful sets with a background cast of humorously accurate everyday people. With Rye Lane, Raine Allen Miller deconstructs the well-worn genre of Rom-Coms to create something so uniquely fresh with dialogue so sharp and fast you catch new lines on every rewatch.
This film is truly a love letter to London.
