Doors open 7pm Event 7.30pm to 9.30pm Are various forms of machine taking over the world? Will we soon be sat on the sofa with everything being done for us? What is the secret tech world that operates behind anything from your credit card payments and keeps our data safe? All will be revealed in this talk from our Surrey experts.

What the **** is post-quantum cryptography? Dr Dan Gardham (Lecturer in Cryptography) Cryptography, often referred to as the art or science of secret writing, is concerned with securing communication and data by encoding it in a way that only authorised parties can understand. It underpins all modern technology; from securing your contactless payment at Tesco, keeping people out of your email account, to protecting national secrets. However, quantum computers are thought to be on the verge of realisation, promising to revolutionise computation but also break modern cryptography in the next 5 to 50 years. This talk introduces post-quantum cryptography, a new field of study that designs techniques thought to resist advantages offered by quantum computation. We focus on the challenges and opportunities that arise from this field and try to forget that we are probably already too late. ... When will I be replaced by a robot? Dr Rob Siddall (Lecturer in Robotics) Modern robots get more impressive every day. Yet even the best robotic dog couldn't keep up with an overfed family dog running through a forest. Why? This talk will look at the subtle ways animals do more with less, looking at nature through the lens of a robot designer. By looking at the different ways that animals fly, swim, run and climb, we can discover new ways to make our robots better, and in the process learn things that we can use to help the natural world.
