Doors open 7pm Event 7.30pm to 9.30pm

Join our Surrey scientists as we journey to the farthest reaches of space, but also take a moment to look at what is inside each and every one of us back on Planet Earth.

The quantum of life itself Ian Abrahams (PhD Student) How are the unique effects of quantum physics involved in the processes of life? Regardless of background, knowledge or experience, feel free to listen in as University of Surrey quantum biology PhD student Ian T. Abrahams explores some potential avenues through which one may be able to answer this question, discussing techniques and concepts ranging from molecular biology to theoretical physics. Find out how close we may be to finding more concrete answers to such a question and what sorts of steps it may take to get there. ... How much gold is there in the Universe? Dr Denis Erkal (Associate Professor of Astrophysics) In this talk I will start by explaining how big our solar system is and how big our Galaxy is (they’re both huge!). Once we understand how big our Galaxy is, I will then explain how surprisingly small the Universe is. With these sizes in hand, I will explain how elements like gold are created and how we can estimate how much gold is in the Universe. Finally, I will explain how the Universe’s expansion affects how much of this gold we can ever reach even with a fleet of spaceships moving close to the speed of light. A great talk for all aspiring space pirates!
