The first phase of work will take place between the junctions of Onslow Street and Commercial Road, incorporating the corner where the taxi rank is currently located. This includes surface water draining works, replacement of existing road edges with new kerbs and paving, improved crossing locationsand new carriageway surfacing and road marking.

Traffic, while slowed, will maintain access through the area during the day for the duration of the work. Traffic management systems will be in place to ensure clearly signposted access for vehicles and safe, alternative routes for pedestrians. Some work will be undertaken at night to reduce the impact on traffic during the day; which will restrict access to the area during night time working hours. This will take place towards the end of Phase 1 and details of the timetable will be shared nearer the time. Deliveries to local businesses will be maintained via temporary traffic diversions at night.

The existing taxi rank adjacent to Onslow Street will be temporarily relocated during Phase 1 from 8th September, with taxi ranks placed instead at the bottom of the High Street nearby and on Bedford Road, for a 13-week duration.

Phase 1 of the highways work is due to complete at the end of November 2025.

Information on the next phases of highway work will be available in the coming weeks. To stay up to date with how work might affect your journey, look out for further details and updates at www.northstreetregeneration.co.uk.
