Learn, create and connect with The Guildford Institute’s new October 2026–March 2027 programme
The Guildford Institute has launched its new October 2026 to March 2027 programme, packed with more than 100 opportunities to learn something new, develop skills, support wellbeing and enjoy shared experiences. From inspiring talks and creative workshops to live music, visits and cultural events, there is something for everyone at the Institute’s welcoming community hub.
Based in the heart of Guildford, The Guildford Institute is an independent arts education charity housed in a Grade II listed building on Ward Street. Through its varied programme, the Institute brings people together through learning, creativity, culture and shared experiences, creating a place where everyone can belong, learn and take part.
The new programme features Guildford Festival of the Arts, taking place from 1- 4 October 2026. As part of this celebration of artistic expression, The Guildford Institute will host a range of artist talks. Discover how one of history’s most influential art movements transformed painting in Impressionist Revolutions with Ronnie Ireland, or explore the lives and work of two extraordinary artists in Emin and Kahlo: The Pleasure and the Pain with Tammy Ellis.
History enthusiasts can discover the fascinating story of one of the world’s most famous medieval treasures in Two Histories of the Bayeux Tapestry with Roger Price. Timed to coincide with the Bayeux Tapestry’s loan to the British Museum in 2026, the course explores both the events depicted in the remarkable artwork and the extraordinary history of the tapestry itself.
The Institute’s popular coach visits continue to offer opportunities to explore places of historic and cultural interest beyond Guildford. This season includes a visit to Ham House, the National Trust’s magnificent 17th-century property on the River Thames, featuring a private guided garden tour followed by time to explore its beautiful interiors, collections and stories.
Creative learners can develop new skills through a range of practical courses and workshops. Still Life Drawing and Painting with Songül Yilmaz Meier invites participants to develop their composition and painting skills, inspired by artists including Cézanne.
The programme also explores fascinating ideas across science, literature, history and the arts, including Project Apollo (1969–70)- Fulfilment, Ennui, Disaster with Professor Craig Underwood, examining the achievements and challenges of the Apollo missions, and Guildford and the Postcard Craze with Julian Morgan, exploring the town’s connection to the golden age of the picture postcard and The Guildford Institute’s own exceptional collection.
Alongside learning and creative activities, the Institute offers opportunities to enjoy relaxed and sociable experiences, including the Festive Wine Tasting Workshop with Charlie Goblet D’Alviella from local Surrey Wine School. Participants can sample a carefully selected range of wines while learning more about tasting, pairing and choosing wines for seasonal celebrations.
The GI Music Lounge continues to support independent artists across jazz, folk, acoustic and classical genres. The intimate venue gives audiences the opportunity to experience live performances up close, while providing a platform for both emerging talent and established musicians. Every ticket purchased helps support The Guildford Institute as a charity and enables the organisation to continue bringing live music experiences to Guildford.
