We are delighted to receive the Government’s green light for plans to relocate a number of allotments from Bellfields Road to a nearby new allotment which at last enables the council’s flagship regeneration scheme Weyside Urban Village to proceed . Providing 1500 homes and opening up a mile of riverside it is an important moment for the project.

The Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities Rt Hon Michael Gove MP has approved our proposal. This retains some allotments at Bellfields Road and relocates the remainder to a new site known as North Moors and to an extension of existing allotments at Aldershot Road.

Lead Councillor for Regeneration, Cllr John Rigg, said, “ I am very pleased. This decision hopefully puts an end to years of uncertainty not least for allotment holders and the culmination of considerable efforts by our officers to meet the requests of those affected. We are committed to working with the Guildford Allotment Co-operative Society to ensure a smooth move to the new allotments.”

The concept of moving  allotments to allow new homes to be built on the site has been extensively discussed over the last ten years and was included in the Council’s Local Plan in 2019.

Cllr Rigg added, “The Weyside Urban Village project makes a significant contribution to our housing delivery over the next ten years. Importantly, we anticipate over 600 of the new homes will be affordable for local people with housing need.”
