The Friary Guildford Supports The Climate Coalition’s #ShowtheLove Campaign

This February, showing the love means more than just Valentine’s Day at The Friary Guildford.

Not only is the Guildford shopping centre sharing inspirational content to help their shoppers celebrate their loved ones this Valentine’s, but they are also supporting The Climate Coalition’s #ShowtheLove campaign.

The Climate Coalition is the UK’s largest group of people dedicated to action against climate change. Their aim is for a cleaner, greener future where the UK no longer contributes to climate change. This means cleaning up the air we breathe, having warmer homes powered by cheaper energy and restoring green spaces.

The government has already committed to a net zero target, with the aim for the UK to be more than three-quarters of the way to net zero by 2050, but to make this possible in the future, we need to take action today.

To help do their bit in tackling the battle against climate change, The Friary Guildford is running a #ShowtheLove campaign, sponsored by local creative design agency, Gidden Place, and in partnership with ZERO Carbon Guildford.

Ben McCallan, from ZERO Carbon Guildford, said, “ZERO was created to help drive collaboration on tackling the climate crisis by bringing together residents, businesses, schools, the council and churches, to ensure a secure future for our borough, our children and planet.

“We’re thrilled to be teaming up with The Friary Guildford on their #ShowtheLove campaign, and hope to keep building momentum in Guildford’s efforts to mitigate and adapt to the climate and biodiversity crises we face.

“Pop into ZERO and The Friary Guildford during February to show your support for tackling climate change.”

Green hearts made from 100% recycled materials are dotted around The Friary Guildford with facts and figures of the Centre’s sustainability credentials. Did you know, on average, The Friary Guildford:

  • has saved enough energy in 3 years to power 500 return flights from London to New York.
  • recycle the weight of 40 cars in cardboard each year.
  • recycle the weight of 55 cows in mixed recycling each year.
  • convert the equivalent weight of 5 elephants worth of food waste each year and turn it into energy.
  • combined recycling provides enough power for 228 televisions and 84 fridge freezers for a whole year.

As impressive as the shopping centre’s statistics already are, they’re not stopping there! Stephanie Maynard, Marketing & Retail Relations at The Friary Guildford, said: “We wanted to partner with local schools for our #ShowtheLove campaign as it helps spread the word even further in the community and gets children thinking about the importance of climate change, which is crucial as it’s their generation that will be effected the most by it.

“On behalf of The Friary Guildford, I’d like to thank the five schools involved, including St John’s Pre-School, St Nicholas CofE Aided Infant School, Holy Trinity Pewley Down School, Sandfield Primary School and Onslow Infant School.

“The school children have been busy decorating hearts and writing their climate change pledge, ready to hang on our giant heart display at The Friary Guildford. We can’t wait to see their designs and what ideas they come up with!”

Once all schools have submitted their entries, The Friary Guildford Management team will review them and choose their favourite design to be included in their next green initiative campaign.
