Members of the of the Yvonne Arnaud Youth Theatre’s production group Act 3 performed at the Pilgrim Wood Residential & Dementia Care Home on Tuesday 18 June 2019. The company, comprised of eight to 13 year-olds, performed a devised piece of theatre entitled Community Matters, which was based on what community means to them, the role the Youth Theatre plays in the community and historical local community stories.

Pilgrim Wood Residential & Dementia Care Home is a 35-bed care home, specialising in elderly care including those suffering with dementia, located in Sandy Lane, Guildford. Head of Activities, Sharon Mitchell, said “it’s really lovely and important to be working with the Yvonne Arnaud to bring us together, as part of Guildford’s community. Hopefully this is just the start of something really nice. We’ve got big things planned!”

Speaking on the motivation behind the project, the Yvonne Arnaud’s Youth and Education Ambassador and Act 3 leader Ellie Johnson explained “Over the summer term, I really wanted to encourage Act 3 to think about what community means to them – both their local and personal communities. We reflected on how the Youth Theatre is a community within itself.”

“Seeing the kids engage and chat with the residents following the performance was a joy. The residents absolutely loved talking with them, and the atmosphere in the room was so positive and uplifting.”

The Yvonne Arnaud Youth Theatre provides opportunities for members who are young adults to become involved in assisting younger production groups.  This production was co-directed Cat MacLachlan, who is the current Act 3 assistant.  Cat said “This project has been really important for the company but also for myself, because I’ve been given a great chance to take the reins and do a bit of my own directing, which has been a great way to learn.”

12 year-old Act 3 member Tom Skwarski explained “I found it really nice seeing the audience’s reactions.  I think us coming together might have made their day.”

Tom added “Our youth Theatre helps everyone, even if they’re not directly involved.  It helps bring joy to people, like the people we’ve performed to today. That’s what it’s all about!”
