The first Christmas carol was possibly the 129 AD ‘Angels Hymn’ at a time when Christian hymns began to replace pagan songs celebrating Winter Solstice. We will follow the history of carols from the Middle Ages including ‘God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen’ and ‘While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks by Night’ and uncover their true origin, meaning and evolution during the festive seasons of the past.
