This important session aims to raise awareness about sickle cell disease (SCD).  It will start with a 20 minute educational session on SCD from SCD specialist nurse, Nkechi Ayanwu.  Professor Dame Elizabeth Anionwu will then share her experience being the first SCD specialist nurse in Britain and her experience setting up the UK’s first SCD counselling centre. Daniel Nwosu, recent Surrey graduate and founder of SCYSS charity, will give his patient perspective and Hayley King (founder of Cianna’s Smile charity) will share her experience as the mother of a child with SCD. Advancing racial equality in higher education. Understanding the past to take action today – 21 October, 1-2pm, online. (https://www.surrey.ac.uk/events/20201021-advancing-racial-equality-higher-education)

Amatey Doku (from Nous Group) will join Professor Osama Khan (Pro Vice-Chancellor Education) to discuss what we can do to advance race equality within universities.  Amatey Doku is a specialist consultant in Higher Education and has worked with senior leaders at a government, sector and university level, tackling structural inequalities and using qualitative experiences to offer an evidenced-based approach to solutions.  Amatey will reflect on inequality in UK higher education and suggest solutions for how the sector can eradicate these inequalities.
